Feathers: The one structure that more than any other separates birds from all other animals is an outgrowth from the skin called the feather.  It has been said that birds evolved from reptiles and therefore, feathers evolved from scales.   However, nothing that is even halfway between scale and feather has ever been found to date.

Feathers are one of the strongest natural structures ever evolved.  Keratin is their principle component.  The out feathers have a ziploc system of barbs and barbules  to keep them structurally sound and efficient.

Quicknote:  -  White feathers of a bird wear more quickly than darker colors.  These are the feathers that lack melanin, a pigment, and are less durable and therefore wear away more quickly especially at the tip of the tail.

Customer Hide N Sleep™ stories, send us a short story about your bird(s) and their Hide N Sleep.  We've heard so many amazing and amusing tales over the years it's time to share more of the laughter, happiness, and gratefulness.  In addition you will learn about the customizations, problem solving, and just plain fun events about parrots and their Hide N Sleeps.  We do like to communicate with our customers.  Somehow, we mutually realize talking "parrots" with another bird person makes us all feel "normal".
